Pastor Marvin Lee Barnett Sr., the son of Gladys Barnett and James (Jim) Presley, was born June 12, 1938 in Conecuh County, Alabama and departed this life March 30, 2021 at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, grandparents (who raised him) A.G. and Carrie Shannon Barnett, his loving wife, Evelyn Rogers Barnett, and his loving son, Marvin Lee Barnett, Jr.
Marvin accepted Christ as his Savior and Lord at an early age and was baptized by Rev. K. C. Bass, Pastor of Second Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Evergreen, Alabama (Owassa Community). He attended Lincoln Elementary School and Conecuh County Training School in Conecuh County, Alabama. In the tenth grade, he moved from Evergreen to Chicago, IL where he attended and graduated from Richard T. Crane High School in 1957.
He met the love of his life, Evelyn Marie Rogers in Chicago, IL and they were married February 20, 1960. To that union four children were born. Marvin accepted the call of God into the Gospel Ministry and preached his first sermon at Mt. Ridge Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, IL. Following his first sermon, he served and preached at Rev. Enoch’s Home Church, Mt. Ridge M.B. Church, Broadview Baptist Church, and New Morning Star Baptist Church. He was called to Pastor Resurrection Baptist Church where he served faithfully until he had to resign to become the principal caregiver to his wife. He served for a number of years as an Associate Minister at New Horizon Missionary Baptist Church. He became Pastor of this church in 2016 where he served faithfully until his health failed.. He served with Friendship District Baptist Association and as a preacher for the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. After being called into the Ministry he attended Chicago Baptist Institute and Moody Bible Institute both in Chicago, IL.
Pastor Barnett was a faithful husband, father, Pastor and friend. He always put others first. He could frequently be seen at the bedside of the sick even if they were not members of his church..
He leaves to cherish his memories: two daughters, Elana Rose Barnett, Cypress, TX; Felicia Barnett Watson, Chicago, IL; one son, Rev. A. Craig Barnett (Donna), Houston, TX; five grandchildren: Donell (LaShonda) Barnett, Courtney (Eugene)Treadwell and James Earl Watson Jr. all of Chicago, IL; Candace Barnett and Ashley Barnett of Cypress, TX; four great-grandchildren, Bailey Barnett, Cypress, TX; Montel Pittman-Barnett,
King Albert Treadwell , and Kendell Barnett all of Chicago, IL; one sister, Carrie E. James, Evergreen, AL; one sister-in-law Pamela Faye of Fort Worth Texas and two brothers in-law Jerry Rogers , Natchez MS and Vincent Rogers Chicago, IL, one special cousin, Eveleaner Elliott of Evergreen, AL; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
