Elven Thomas Cobb Sr. was born in Hernando, MS on July 12, 1930 to Obie and Valleaner Cobb. He was baptized at Nights Chapel at an early age. He married Katie Oliver in December 1953. To their union was born five children. He moved to Chicago in late 1957 to prepare a place for his family who followed in 1958.
Elven was employed by Stone Perforating Company and Continental Can Company. He retired from Continental Can Company after thirty years. After retirement, he was known to frequent his daughter’s place of employment, Apollo Detective Agency. He was a regular visitor until they hired him part-time as the handy man. This is where he became affectionately known as “Pops”. He was employed there until 2009.
Elven truly enjoyed fishing with his son Chester Sr., bike riding, dancing and listening to the blues. He loved to barbeque and was known for his smoked ribs, rib tips and homemade sauce. He cooked for numerous family functions and holidays. He was known to get on the dance floor and do what he called “cut a rug”. He loved laughing and telling jokes.
Elven attended Family and Friends Day at Greater Rock MBC which led to him joining in 2010. He participated in the Men’s Day Choir and enjoyed assisting on the grill for the Church Community Fest. He was a faithful member until his health declined.
He was preceded in death by both parents, One great grandson Royal Mell, two brothers Jerry Cobb and Sammy Cobb, four sisters Lealer Graham, Bertha Gray, Edna Smith and Venice Bridgeforth.
He leaves to cherish his memory four sons and one daughter, Thomas Cobb Sr. (Vanessa), Jesse Cobb Sr. (Vanessa) Chester Cobb Sr. (Kendra) Elven Cobb Jr. (Angela) Lorraine Toney (Darnell); twenty-three grandchildren Eugene, Terrance, Juan, Tameika, Cachet, Chester Jr., Darnell Jr., Justin, Sashay, Brian, Dion, Ronneisha, Tomonique, Rhakia, Thomas Jr., Brandon, Jesse Jr., Daniel, Danielle, Kierra, Breanna, Katie and Jason; twenty-three great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Also, a host of nieces, nephews and best friend Willie Harris.
